During my Erasmus exchange in Paris, I worked on an architecture project centered around sound, time, and architecture. My partner and I chose a site in Pantin, reimagining an existing agricultural warehouse in an industrial area. The goal was to create a flexible space that harmonized with the ongoing human activities around the site, while maintaining a clear connection to music.
Located by the Canal d’Ourcq, the design blended the existing industrial structure with an organic form, inspired by SANAA’s Rolex Learning Center. We aimed to create an adaptable, “in-between” space that preserved the original structure while adding new, dynamic elements.
Drawing from Gavin Bryars’ “found material” philosophy, we viewed the structure as a skeleton, with spaces functioning like organs and skin. Our final design included three main components: an alveolar space, the original building, and a flexible platform. The program included rooms for musical experimentation, a theater, and adaptable spaces for various needs.
The process was creative and free, and we used models, or “artifacts,” to explore the sculptural, organic nature of the design.
